The most dangerous fire protection system is the one everyone assumes is working. A sprinkler network, a hydrant line, a pump set or an alarm panel can sit untouched for months, looking perfectly intact — until the moment it is called upon and fails. At Northern Star Engineering, having completed over 1,000 sites, we have learned one truth above all: installing a system is only half the job. The scale of the problem is sobering. Industry audits suggest only a small fraction of installed fire systems in India stay fully active — by some estimates, fewer than one in five. In one 2024 audit of 577 industrial units, barely 12% had followed through on fire-safety compliance after approval.

The reasons vary: systems are not maintained, owners do not fully understand them, or there is no budget to keep them active once installed.

These factors differ from state to state and country to country but one truth stays constant: a system must be maintained so that when an emergency comes, it actually activates.
